13th Annual Elden Curtiss Lecture Series -- "Humor In The Bible: The Rabble-Rousing Rhetoric Of Prophetic Humor"

7:00pm - 8:00pm
Much of Biblical humor has been lost in translation and further suppressed by Christian perceptions of the sacred and the mundane. Yet Biblical humor serves an important prophetic role in the Hebrew and Jewish literature of antiquity. Modern images of Jesus have reduced his humor to sweet laughter and all but eliminated his clever use of prophetic humor.

Dr. Terri Bednarz, RSM, will illustrate the obscure forms of humor in the Bible, including amusing wordplays, sardonic hyperbole, scatological jokes, comic absurdity and appalling reversals. She will discuss the prophetic function of Biblical humor and demonstrate how prophetic humor compels us to respond to the urgent needs in our world today.

Holy Hour for Vocations with Archbishop Lucas

6:00pm - 8:00pm
The Serra Club of West Omaha invites all the faithful to join us for a special Holy Hour for Vocations with Archbishop George J. Lucas, Rev. Ralph O’Donnell, and Rev. Frank Baumert on Monday, September 20, at St. Margaret Mary, 6116 Dodge Street in Omaha.

Together we will pray a Rosary for Vocations before the Blessed Sacrament, exposed in a special Serra traveling monstrance that was blessed by Pope Saint John Paul II. We will also recite the Litany for Vocations, and spend time in silent adoration as we pray for an increase in vocations throughout the Archdiocese of Omaha.

This special prayer event begins with a welcome reception at 6:00 p.m. Our speaker at the reception will be Deacon Mike Conzett who will talk about the need for vocations and share his discernment to the permanent diaconate. At 7:00 p.m. we will gather in the sanctuary for the Holy Hour for Vocations.

For questions, contact us at westomaha@serrainternational.org. All are welcome!

"The Eucharist is a priceless treasure: by not only celebrating it but also by praying before it outside of Mass we are enabled to make contact with the very wellspring of grace." Pope St. John Paul II
