Ixim Guatemalan Mission Information Session

12:00pm - 1:00pm
Ixim: Spirit of Solidarity – Join Us on Mission

Since 2004, parishioners from across the Archdiocese of Omaha have gone to our sister diocese in Huehuetenango, Guatemala to work alongside our sisters and brothers in Christ. Ixim missionaries build bridges of understanding and solidarity by learning about the lives and realities of those in Huehuetenango. Over the years, Ixim missionaries have staffed medical clinics, taught lessons at local schools, applied fluoride treatments to children, assisted with reforestation projects, painted parish and school buildings, and helped implement clean water projects. Our 19th trip will be June 13 – June 23, 2024. Learn more about our mission trip at an upcoming information meeting:

Theology Matters

7:00pm - 8:30pm
Seeing The Big Picture: What survivors of clergy sexual abuse have taught us about the meaning of harm and healing. In this presentation, professors from three different fields -- criminal justice, religious studies and social and cultural history -- share their research on how the harm done in “just one” reported case of sexual abuse ripples beyond a single victim and into an entire community. This topic hits very close to home and forces us to confront a reflexive desire to protect a beloved institution even when it is implicated in abuse. Presenters are:
Julia Feder, Ph.D. - associate professor of religious studies and theology at St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana
Dr. Heather Fryer, Ph.D. historian specializing in 20th Century US social and cultural history
Dr. Rebecca Murray, Ph.D. professor of criminal justice and associate dean at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska

Annual Christmas Prayer Service and Social

3:00pm - 5:00pm

We are so very thankful for your service to our parishes, schools, and ministries. As a small demonstration of our gratitude, the Archdiocese of Omaha Stewardship & Development office invites you to prayer service and Christmas social. The gathering will be held in the recently restored 19th century Greco-Roman church (its interior is like no other church in Omaha, complete with the stain glass windows imported from Bavaria and Carrera marble from Italy) and the social will follow immediately in the parish hall.

Bethlehem Peace Light at St. John's Church

(12/24) - (01/07)

For thousands of years, a vigil lamp has burned above the place of Jesus’ birth in the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Each year, the flame from this lamp is spread throughout the world as a symbol of peace. As the conflicts in Gaza continue to range, the peace that this flame represents is needed more than ever. St. John’s will welcome this flame during the 5:00pm Christmas Eve Mass on December 24. After this, the flame will burn near the Nativity scene in St. John's Church throughout the entirety of the Christmas season, ending with Epiphany on January 7. Please bring a wind-proof candle or lantern with you to St. John's if you would like to take this flame home with you and use in your family’s celebrations of Christmas.
