Archbishop Lucas to lift dispensation from Sunday obligation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mar. 31, 2021 (Omaha, Neb.) – Archbishop George Lucas is lifting the Sunday and Holy Day dispensation the weekend of May 22-23 which means parishioners are once again obligated to attend Mass.

The archbishop dispensed Catholics from the obligation to attend Sunday Mass last March as local measures were taken to slow the spread of the global coronavirus pandemic.

Archbishop Lucas reminds those who are ill, immune-deficient, symptomatic, or at high risk due to chronic conditions, that they are dispensed from the obligation to attend Mass.

In explaining his reasons for lifting the dispensation, Lucas said, “Parishes have shown over the past year that they know how to keep parishioners safe, while also providing for our people’s need to worship together.”

Each pastor has been asked to determine how best to implement guidance from the Nebraska DHHS and local health departments. At this time, there are no archdiocese-wide restrictions beyond those mandated by local government.

The faithful who are unable to attend Mass are urged to make holy the Lord’s Day and to pray, read the Scriptures, and take part in acts of charity.

The archbishop’s letter to the faithful and an FAQ are available on the Archdiocese of Omaha’s website at https://archomaha.org/returningtomass.
