Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is in commemoration of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem in the last week before He was arrested and crucified. People lined His path, or waved palm branches, a symbol at the time of victory. This entry is believed by Christians to have been prophesied in Zechariah.

Chrism Mass

On Monday morning in Holy Week, the archbishop, joined by the priests of the diocese, gather at the Cathedral to celebrate the Chrism Mass. The Mass is at 11:00 a.m. At the Mass the archbishop blesses three oils — the oil of catechumens (oleum catechumenorum or oleum sanctorum), the oil of the infirm (oleum infirmorum) and holy chrism (sacrum chrisma) — which will be used in the administration of the sacraments throughout the archdiocese for the year.

Croise Spiritual Journey for Men

7:00pm - 8:00pm
Croise is a new approach to teach men to pray, set goals and take action to express their faith in ways which opens their minds and strengthen their resolve to change the world they live in. It is a time in history when our original faith must be reignited, understood and lived with compelling passion by men. The confusion of today must be used to clearly define who Jesus Christ is for the world. Our premier Holy Hour will use magnificent music, time tested historical writings, preaching prayer, ingenious use of technology and a lightning demonstration of the French defensive fencing move Croise (kwaa-zay).

All men over 18 are welcome to Croise every third Monday of the month at St. Cecilia's.

Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday)

Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter. Christians remember it as the day of the Last Supper, when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and established the ceremony known as the Eucharist.

Triduum

(04/18) - (04/20)
The summit of the Liturgical Year is the Easter Triduum—from the evening of Holy Thursday to the evening of Easter Sunday. Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ’s Paschal Mystery. The single celebration of the Triduum marks the end of the Lenten season, and leads to the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil.

The liturgical services that take place during the Triduum are:

Mass of the Lord’s Supper (Holy Thursday)
Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion (Good Friday)
Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord (Holy Saturday)

Good Friday

Good Friday is not a holy day of obligation as there are no Masses from Holy Thursday until Easter.  It is a day of fasting and abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
