First Sunday of Advent

A period of prayer in preparation for Christmas, including four Sundays, the first nearest the feast of St. Andrew, November 30. It is the beginning of the Church’s liturgical year. The use of the organ and other musical instruments is restricted in liturgical functions. However, it is allowed 1. in extraliturgical functions, 2. for exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, 3. to support singing, and 4. on Gaudete Sunday, feasts and solemnities, and in any extraordinary celebration. Altars may not be decorated with flowers. In the celebration of matrimony, the nuptial blessing is always imparted. But the spouses are advised to take into account the special character of the liturgical season. Masses for various needs and votive Masses for the dead are not allowed unless there is a special need. (Etym. Latin adventus, a coming, approach, arrival.)

Light up for Christ

6:00pm - 9:00pm
Knights of Columbus Council 11879 hopes that you will be our guest at the “Light Up For Christ” celebration! It’s a wonderful way to kick off the Christmas season and spread the joyful tidings of Christmas. Please join in the annual ceremonial blessing and lighting of the Nativity scene on Tuesday, December 4th at 6 PM. This is always a fun-filled evening! We meet in the Commons and proceed as a group out to the crèche (nativity scene) singing “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” as we go. Following the short formal ceremony led by Fr. Leo, we head back to the Commons where cookies, hot chocolate, coffee, and other beverages will be available. There will be activities for the children as Santa Claus and his elves make their way to visit. Why fight the traffic and long lines for the Mall Santa? Jolly Old St. Nick will be making his special visit to the St. Matthew community! May God bless you all, and it is our wish that you and your families have a blessed and Merry Christmas!

Croise Spiritual Journey for Men

7:00pm - 8:00pm
Croise is a new approach to teach men to pray, set goals and take action to express their faith in ways which opens their minds and strengthen their resolve to change the world they live in. It is a time in history when our original faith must be reignited, understood and lived with compelling passion by men. The confusion of today must be used to clearly define who Jesus Christ is for the world. Our premier Holy Hour will use magnificent music, time tested historical writings, preaching prayer, ingenious use of technology and a lightning demonstration of the French defensive fencing move Croise (kwaa-zay).

All men over 18 are welcome to Croise every third Monday of the month at St. Cecilia's.
