Developing a legacy giving strategy for your office is vital for your organization’s future. Dr. Russell James, Professor of Charitable Financial Planning at Texas Tech University, is a renowned expert and advocate on the importance of planned giving to a development office. He will share his vast knowledge on how to have a conversation with your constituents of legacy planning. He has also done extensive research on the field and focuses on the understanding effectiveness in legacy gift fundraising starts with reality.

Beyond strategy, you will also need the fundamentals and our office will pass on best practices in legacy planning and endowment growth. Tim Bogatz and Tony LaMar from the archdiocese’s office of Stewardship and Development will share ways to position your development programs for success.

About the Presenter:

Russell James, J.D., Ph.D., CFP® is a chaired professor in the Department of Personal Financial Planning at Texas Tech University where he directs the on-campus and online graduate program in Charitable Financial Planning (planned giving).  Prior to his career as an academic researcher, Dr. James worked as the Director of Planned Giving for Central Christian College in Moberly, Missouri for 6 years and later served as president of the college for more than 5 years, where he had direct and supervisory responsibility for all fundraising.  During his presidency the college successfully completed two major capital campaigns, built several new debt-free buildings, and more than tripled enrollment.  Dr. James has published research in over 75 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and has been quoted on charitable and financial issues in a variety of news sources including The Economist, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, ABC News, U.S. News & World Report, USA Today, the Associated Press, Bloomberg News and the Chronicle of Philanthropy and his financial neuroimaging research was profiled in The Wall Street Journal’s Smart Money Magazine.

Enjoy Peruvian food and a brief presentation on Foundation Path of Hope, which provides wheelchairs, walkers, blankets, canes, walking sticks for the blind, and other supplies to people living in extreme poverty in remote, rural areas of Peru.

Our conference is an outreach of Franciscan University in partnership with the St. Louis Archdiocesan Office of Youth Ministry. Two conferences are held every year in July and take place on the campus of Missouri State University in Springfield, MO.
